UX Design, AI and socializing – how to stay in touch with your neighborhood
“Elder adults want to use technology, but under certain conditions…Technology should support human contact, not replace it.”
Hello everyone!
Welcome again after this a little bit longer weekend – I hope you enjoyed this time well!
Last time I wrote about interactive touch screen located in a strategic place (for those who are not tech fans) and Smartphone app (for the ones who use a Smartphone on a daily basis) – both would display several information about incoming events, workshops and meetings in a neighborhood or the city. In this post I would like to focus more in depth on design aspects of tech devices and provide some pros and cons I received from Lian and my friend as a feedback.
In order to find a solution, it is wise to change a way of thinking – try to be as an end user or a designer. Let’s start from designer’s part: “UX Design” – which means “User Experience Design” which “is the process of creating products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. This involves the design of the entire process of acquiring and integrating the product, including aspects of branding, design, usability, and function.” During design process we need to follow “why, what and how” rule: in the beginning it is essential to find an answer WHY someone is going to use this device – question about motivation: what kind of action user would like to perform or what kind of values want to fulfill?
From the end user perspective, first we need to find an answer whether interactive touch screen is attractive for people in any age or they need have face to face contact with a hostess to get some information?
There is no doubt than interaction with real human have own value: of course we can create humanoid robot with AI (artificial intelligence – simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems including learning, reasoning and self-correction) which may look almost like a human, but still it may be awkward for many people to speak with it… For me hostess cannot be replaced by humanoid robot… But…
Is it really required to think about it now? We are used to use touch screens: they are in museums, public transport, hospitals, offices and many more. The question is how to adapt it to people’s needs and how to make them use it: interactive touch screens have lots of pros (which hostess does not have):
- are available 24/7 no matter what kind of weather is
- is neutral (nationally, racially etc.)
- can be easily updated
- is possible to display information in any language (it is important is intercultural city as Eindhoven)
- are energy saving (with solar panel this device does not need any power)
- paper saving: there is no need to print any flyer
- it is possible to provide lots of facilitations for people with disorders: voice panel, pictograms, font size, colors
- personalization and customization of displayed information based on AI, for example displaying news based on previously gathered data (logging to the app platform by face recognition or personal account)
- FAQ, chat boot
and more…
I hope to receive a comment from you – the more info I have, the better solution I can prepare :)
Would you and members of your family use this interactive touchscreen?
Is there something more I need to think about?
What is a perfect location for it?
Cheers,
Natalia
