"Silver surfers" and the one who sticked-in-the-mud: way for connecting

"Social media may contribute to older people's empowerment, while increasing their sense of control and self-efficacy."

Hello everyone!

In the beginning, I would like to say "I am sorry" because of one day delay to post this blog... I spent a great time with my sister in Poland and brought a new idea for "long lasting" improvement of connecting and bonding!

Each day may bring new opportunities, a new idea or be the first of "the rest of life"... For me, this day was on last Sunday, when I went to the museum together with my little sister and grandfather. Except a fact, that I am a perfectionist (still-unfortunately) I also love to find a new way of use for known items, I am a big fan of matching and creating new solutions. In this blog, I would want to try to look from another perspective, be more creative and go little more to depth. But let start from the beginning:

Lovely sunny day, a family trip to the museum in the old part of Kraków: incredible antiques and something, what seemed to be ill-assorted: electronic INTERACTIVE TOUCHSCREEN!

I guess that you are not yet inspired by this device, but in a minute I will show you how to use it to connect people in a neighborhood :)

I enjoyed watching old monuments, paintings, and antiques, but what inspired me the most was my grandfather, who tried to use an interactive touchscreen, which was accessible in almost every room. This is really usefull device: it can display you a way to the exit door, show more details about author or item itself, and except that is simple to use and really intuitive – I showed to my grandfather how to use it and after 2 minutes he was able to navigate to any tab on his own: was really curious what can be seen in a next room :) As you may remember, he is not “tech-savvy”, but thanks to big font, simple and intuitive interface he used it without any problem – and with joy!

How to correlate interactive touchscreen with connecting and socializing in Drents Drop district in Eindhoven?
My idea is, from one side, to install this kind of device in a common area like a park, playground, or bus station: it could show incoming events, festivals, workshops etc. in a neighborhood and city. This is a “version” for those who are not a big fan of technology and do not use internet and smartphone applications too often. For a second group, I would recommend downloading an app with same features. Own account in this app could allow to comment an event and communicate with other users: all for bonding!

The last but not the least – some scientific data:
70% of the elderly from Slovenia use the Internet on a daily basis, British are leaders in this competition: 78%  over 65 do online shopping. What impressed me, is that Facebook is used by 46% of “silver surfers” – almost 1/3 of the adult population in Slovenia.

What I learned is that there are more elder people who use social media than I expected, and it is good news for future of this intervention :)

Do you enjoy this idea as much as I do? I am waiting for your comments!

Cheers,
Natalia
